Physics Facilities
How do I get there and where can I park?
The primary location of the Department of Physics is the Loomis Laboratory of Physics, a 100,000-net assignable square foot (NASF) modern combined laboratory, classroom, and office building. Physics administrative offices, most classrooms, and the Physics-Astronomy Library are located in Loomis.
Directly connected to Loomis is the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory, the Superconductivity Center, and the six-story Physics Tower (known to the rest of the campus as the Engineering Sciences Building). The centralized shared facilities of the MRL/STCS complex provide one of the best and most extensive university-based experimental environment for research in condensed matter, materials, atomic, and laser physics in the world. The Physics Tower is home to the condensed matter theory group (Floor 2) and the Institute for Condensed Matter Theory (Floor 3) and the upper-level Physics teaching laboratories.
The Nuclear Physics Laboratory, located on the southwest corner of Stadium and Oak Streets, provides high-bay experimental space for the nuclear physics experimental group (NPL), and Aeronautical Lab A, located across from the MRL at 101 South Goodwin, provides construction space for the high-energy physics group (HEPG) and their machine shop. The Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group is located in the Beckman Institute.
Jerry Cook is the Physics facilities manager, and Janet Kane, director of budget and resource planning, is responsible for space allocation.
